Celebrated chef Paul Kitching’s 21212 is the only Michelin starred restaurant with rooms in Edinburgh. It offers guests a unique opportunity to enjoy a truly memorable fine dining experience and then retire to the comfort of one of the equally sophisticated boutique-style rooms upstairs. 21212 is located in an elegant Georgian townhouse in the heart of the city – just a short walk from Princes Street – on Royal Terrace, one of the city’s most prestigious addresses.

Paul and his partner, Katie O’Brien, moved to Edinburgh in 2009 to launch their new venture after running the hugely successful Juniper restaurant in Greater Manchester. Together they make a formidable team and have chalked up more than 45 years of Michelin star experience between them.

At 21212, Paul has remained true to his contemporary French cooking style, but, in a unique approach, his menus never feature more than three choices for any course. They change weekly, ensuring that there’s always plenty of variety, even for regular diners. With prices for a two-course weekday lunch starting at just £22, Paul’s exquisite cuisine is accessible, whatever your budget. On the extensive wine list, there’s something to suit every palate.

The restaurant is open for lunch and dinner daily from Tuesday to Saturday, but the four guest bedrooms are available seven nights a week.

Since opening, 21212 has been named ‘Best New Restaurant in the UK’ and Catering in Scotland’s ‘Restaurant of the Year’, as well as being awarded four AA rosettes.

Set over four floors, 21212 has been sumptuously decorated in a style that gives more than a nod towards the glamour and opulence of the Art Deco era.  Many of the building’s stunning period features have been carefully preserved and enhanced, and its spacious proportions are the perfect backdrop for elegant Italian furniture and bold contemporary finishing touches, including fabulous works of art and beautiful etched glass panels. We absolutely love the fabulous butterfly print carpet by Timorous Beasties!

As well as the 38-seat restaurant with open kitchen, there’s a first floor drawing room for guests to use with views across Royal Terrace and two stylish private dining rooms that can be reserved for special occasions.

The four large and beautifully appointed bedrooms each have their own dedicated lounge area. Located on the two upper levels of the house, they boast impressive views over the gardens to the rear, or the city of Edinburgh to the front. On a clear day, you can see as far as the Firth of Forth and beyond.

The grown-up, sophisticated feel continues in the bedrooms, where dark wood and muted shades of olive green and gold create a timeless look. Each room is slightly different, but they all have flat-screen televisions, iPod docking stations and free wireless internet access, as well as plenty of storage space. Two of the luxurious en suite bathrooms feature both a gorgeous freestanding bath and separate shower, and the other two have a large walk-in shower. Luxury toiletries, and fluffy towels and robes are provided.

Prices for a double room range from £95 to £325 per night, and include breakfast.

If guests still have room after their Michelin dining experience, 21212 offers a choice of breakfast options. As you’d expect from a chef of Paul’s calibre, it’s presented with flair and is very much an experience in its own right. Look out for the fun egg cups!

I cannot say enough good things about 21212 and its staff! From our arrival on Monday night to when we left Wednesday morning, we were treated brilliantly. This is definitely on my must-stay-at-again list whenever I next visit the fine city of Edinburgh.
