From its elevated location in the pretty town of Bowness-on-Windermere in the heart of the Lake District National Park, Blenheim Lodge boasts jaw-dropping views across Lake Windermere. This elegant Victorian house was built in 1868 as a gentleman’s country residence and is bordered by acres of National Trust-owned countryside.
With its close proximity to the Dales Way, an 84-mile long footpath linking Bowness-on-Windermere with Ilkley in West Yorkshire, it’s a great spot for keen walkers. If a gentle stroll is more your thing, why not wander to one of the four nearby viewing points for a panoramic view of Lake Windermere and the fells? There’s also plenty of opportunity for cycling, horse riding, biking, fishing and golf. The town centre and Lake Windermere, where you can hop on one of the Windermere Lake Cruises, are just a five-minute walk away.
Nothing is too much trouble for your welcoming hosts Robert and Janz Duncan, who will tailor your break to your exact requirements. They’re always happy to advise guests on the best places to eat and visit, as well as helping to organise activities and outings, from sightseeing tours and guided walks to fishing tuition. They can organise lunch or dinner for you – either at a local eaterie or on board a yacht! Flowers, champagne, wine and handmade chocolates can also be provided. Larger parties can opt to have the house to themselves.
Janz and Robert have ensured that the house has stayed true to its Victorian roots by furnishing it with a carefully chosen blend of antiques, including magnificent mahogany four posters and Louis XV beds; quirky vintage accessories; pretty soft furnishings from Laura Ashley and more modern pieces.
Guests are welcome to relax in the comfortable TV lounge, which has views of the lake and fells. There’s free wireless internet access throughout the house and a private car park. Blenheim Lodge is a non-smoking property.
Guests can make use of two fishing permits for the local area, which are available on a first-come-first-served basis. You also get free access to a nearby country club, which has a gym, swimming pool, sauna, Jacuzzi, steam room, table tennis and more.
Robert and Janz aim to minimise the impact of their business on the environment, buying products and services locally; recycling; and using environmentally-friendly products wherever possible.
The guest bedooms were decorated and furnished with the guidance of an interior designer from Laura Ashley using warm but muted colour schemes, plush Dorma bedding and wool carpets. The bespoke, deep pocket sprung mattresses are topped with fluffy Norwegian duvets.
There are 11 en suite guest bedrooms in all, including single, double and triple options. Each one varies in size and style. They all have showers, apart from one room with an elegant freestanding bath and handheld shower. It’s worth discussing the different options with Robert and Janz to find the room that’s best suited to your needs. They all have a digital televisions with built-in radio; tea and coffee-making facilities; tourist information; fluffy towels and quality toiletries.
