As its name suggests, Clearvewe sits on the top of a hill overlooking the Vale of Usk and affords guests mesmerising views of the surrounding fields and woodland. Although this charmingly rustic-style B&B offers complete tranquillity, the little village of Llangwm is nearby. There are excellent road links to both Bristol and Cardiff, and their many attractions.
Clearvewe makes a great base from which to explore the border land between England and Wales, which has a rich heritage. The area has many ancient castles and fortifications. From the grandeur of Caldicot and Raglan Castles to the timeless beauty of Usk and Abergavenny Castles, they are reminders of a less settled period in history. Other nearby places worth a visit include Tintern Abbey and Llanthony Abbey, with their awe-inspiring architecture; Monmouth Priory; and the Roman baths and amphitheatre at Caerleon.
It’s the perfect place to enjoy an activity break; walking, horse riding, cycling, golf and gliding are just some of the outdoor pursuits available locally. The sea, rivers and mountains are all close by, so you may even want to try more energetic activities, such as kayaking and parascending. Alternatively, you may prefer to relax, recharge you batteries and soak up the peaceful atmosphere.
The guest rooms are located in the old stone cart house, which has been sensitively restored to provide a cosy haven, complete with oak beams. Clearvewe’s proprietors, Rachel Lawrence and Andy Preston, have won an award for their efforts to minimise the impact on the environment and make the property as eco-friendly as possible. There’s a cosy lounge area with a wood burning stove, which is a pleasant place to retreat to on chillier evenings after a day of exploring the countryside.
The rooms are furnished in an unfussy, country style that is perfectly suited to the features of the ancient cart house and its surroundings. Natural materials have been used throughout, but Rachel and Andy have not scrimped on the finishing touches that guests would expect from luxury boutique-style accommodation. There’s under-floor heating, and all of the bed and table linen is organic, as are the toiletries in the en suite bathrooms. The bathrooms have large and elegant freestanding baths, as well as power showers.
Children are welcome and cots can be provided. Cleavewe is a non-smoking property.
Two double rooms are available for £80 to £100 per night, and a single room is available for £80 per night. Alternatively, the whole of Clearvewe can be rented on a self-catering basis. Contact the owner to discuss this option.
Given Clearvewe’s idyllic, rural location, it’s no surprise that all ingredients for the delicious, organic breakfast are all sourced from the local area. Guests can rest assured that the food they’re eating has travelled as little as possible, having all been produced or reared nearby. Freshly made home-baked bread complements the free range eggs, free range local bacon and sausages and, depending on the season, you’ll get some home grown fried tomatoes and wild mushrooms too.
