Greystones, a grand, baronial-style house boasting breathtaking views across Oban Bay, has recently been sensitively restored to provide uber stylish, modern bed and breakfast accommodation.
The guest house is very much a hidden gem at the heart of Oban; it’s located just a short, but steep, walk from the town centre in a location that affords guests privacy and tranquility. The town’s many attractions, including its award-winning restaurants, are on your doorstep. In Oban and the surrounding area, you can visit castles and gardens; enjoy boat trips, as well as great walking and cycling opportunities; climb a mountain; or simply relax and take in the sights.
Mark and Suzanne McPhillips, who own Greystones, offer a friendly, personal service and pay exceptional attention to detail. Their first bed and breakfast venture won the Scottish Guesthouse of the Year title in 2008 and, after a spell abroad, they returned to Oban in 2012 to work their magic on Greystones.
A Category B-listed property, Greystones was built in 1885, in the Scottish baronial style, for the chairman of the Kimberley Diamond Mines in South Africa and was originally called Kimberley House. Its name was later changed to to Gleneuchar (Glen of the Key) and it was briefly a hotel before being converted, in 1954, into Oban’s maternity hospital. It was a hospital up until 1995, when it became a hotel again. More recently, it has been extensively renovated by Mark and Suzanne and renamed Greystones, as a reference to the colour of un-cut diamonds.
Mark and Suzanne have given the house a sleek, modern look; simple grey and white colour schemes make the most of the stunning natural light streaming through the windows. It’s furnished with simple, yet striking, pieces of statement furniture and bold, contemporary art works. This allows the building’s period features to shine and perfectly frames the fabulous views beyond the windows.
There’s a stylish guest sitting room with a library offering a diverse choice of reading material. Free wireless internet access is available thoughout the house, and there’s free on-site car parking.
The en suite bedrooms have the same chic, minimalist look as the rest of the house. The beds are dressed in the finest Egyptian cotton linen, and the rooms all have a flat-screen television and DVD/CD player.
In the designer bathrooms you’ll find elegant white fittings and fixtures, fluffy bathrobes and luxury toiletries.
Prices for the five double rooms range from £110 to £160 per night.
Breakfast is served in the elegant turreted dining room and includes a buffet of fruit, cereals, yoghurt and homemade fruit compote followed by your choice of a variety of cooked breakfast options, including The Greystones Grill (a full cooked breakfast); frittata with spinach, parmesan and tomatoes; and kedgeree. Fresh, locally-sourced ingredients are used wherever possible.
