The creation of this bijou, boutique B&B in the centre of historic Winchester was a labour of love for owner Hannah McIntyre, who masterminded every minute detail herself.
Hannah bought the building in 2012 but her B&B only opened for business during the summer of 2014 because she spent 11 months overseeing a mammoth restoration project. The property, which started life as a stable and was once a dance hall, was stripped back to its bare bones, and this enabled Hannah to use her creative vision to full effect.
Today, it offers totally unique and stylish bed and breakfast accommodation peppered with Hannah’s quirky finishing touches. Hannah’s ethos was to create a place where her guests could unwind and enjoy all the comforts that they appreciate in their own homes. In other words, everything you could possibly require for your stay has been thought of, including tea and homemade cake or scones on arrival.
Although it’s in a great location just a couple of minutes’ walk from Winchester’s bustling High Street, Hannah’s is tucked away on a peaceful mews street, making it a relaxing place to retire to after a day of sightseeing or shopping.
Winchester is steeped in history and has much to offer the visitor, including opportunities to explore the medieval castle and fabulous gothic cathedral, where you can climb the tower. You can also visit the grave of literary heroine Jane Austen, who spent her final days in Winchester. For those who venture beyond the city itself, the South Downs National Park is waiting to be explored.
Hannah dreamt of the concept for her B&B long before it became a reality and designed every aspect of it herself. It has a romantic look that’s manages to be both elegant and cosy at the same time. Eclectic, unexpected touches give the place heaps of character, including Hannah’s clever use of reclaimed materials and fun accessories.
There’s a charming lounge area for guests to relax in, complete with an honesty bar and a huge choice of books. A wood burning stove blazes during the winter months. In the dining area, there’s a grand piano on a small stage area! Outside, there’s a pretty courtyard with a seating area for guests to enjoy.
A daily housekeeping service is available, if needed, and Hannah is always on hand to answer any queries you may have.
Each of the three double rooms has its own unique look, but they share a soothing, sanctuary-like quality. They have a super king-sized bed with Egyptian cotton sheets, en suite bathrooms and freestanding baths big enough for two! There’s also a comfortable place for guests to read; free, wireless internet access; and a 40-inch Smart TV with Netflix, Spotify and Freeview.
Prices for a double room start at £185 per night, based on two people sharing.
There are three large tables in the dining room where you can tuck in to Hannah’s selection of homemade granolas served with yoghurt and fresh fruit, homemade baked goods, local breads and homemade jams. Hannah even provides a main course called her ‘weekend special’ which varies from week to week!
