Set in the quiet village of Box in the picturesque Wiltshire countryside, Lorne House offers visitors a quintessentially English getaway in smart and sophisticated surroundings. The attractive stone house has an illustrious history as the childhood home of well known author the Reverend Wilbert Awdry. Its close proximity to Isambard Kingdom Brunel’s famous Great Western Railway and the Box railway tunnel, running between Bath and Chippenham, is said to have inspired the Reverend Awdry to write his Thomas the Tank Engine stories.
Nestled on the southern slope of the By Brook Valley, Lorne House falls within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty; making it a fantastic base from which to explore West Wiltshire and the city of Bath, which is just six miles away. Bath is an impressive and fascinating place to visit, with its Roman Baths, Norman Abbey and Georgian crescents. City tours take place daily by bus, boat and on foot. Castle Combe and Lacock, both of which are National Trust villages and popular locations for films and period dramas, are just a short drive away. The ancient stone circles at Avebury and Stonehenge are also well worth a visit. Guests will also find a great choice of pubs within easy walking distance.
The recently refurbished interior of Lorne House is elegant and charming, and guests are guaranteed a friendly welcome at this luxurious, five star-rated B&B. With beautiful, solid oak floors, sumptuous soft furnishings and elegant furniture, it’s a relaxing place to enjoy a break or business trip.
Lorne House benefits from a veranda, where guests can enjoy views of the attractive garden. Ample off-road parking is available. Lorne House is a non-smoking B&B. Children of any age are welcome.
It has six classically-designed and furnished bedrooms, each of which is named after a figure associated with the rich history of the house or the surrounding area.
