Riverwood is a showstopping Arts and Crafts-style house tucked away in a quiet, leafy spot in the attractive conservation village of Strathtay in the heart of Highland Perthshire.
Set in four acres of beautiful wooded and lawned grounds, it overlooks the majestic River Tay. The river literally runs through the garden and guests can fish for brown trout on a 150-metre stretch. The house itself has superb south-facing views up and down the Tay valley. The whole place has an air of tranquillity that immediately allows guests to unwind. Nature is literally all around you; red squirrels, woodpeckers, pheasants, partridges and hedgehogs are just some of the regular visitors to the garden.
Riverwood’s owners, Alf and Ann Berry, take great care to provide a thoughtful but unobtrusive service, ensuring that their guests feel well cared but have the space and freedom to truly relax.
The pretty village of Strathtay, like its equally charming near neighbour Grandtully, has a smattering of cafés, pubs and shops. It’s approximately ten minutes’ drive from the towns of Pitlochry and Aberfeldy, both busy hubs with plenty to offer visitors. Highland Perthshire is an outdoor lover’s paradise, with opportunities for fishing, walking, cycling, mountaineering and lots more. Riverwood also offers complimentary golf at the Strathtay Golf Course, perfect for those golf lovers out there. For those who prefer to walk, there are plenty of great walks nearby – Ann and Alf will be happy to point you in the right direction.
The appealing exterior and contemporary style of the house reinforce the sense of space and tranquillity. The rooms are large, bright and airy; they’ve been decorated in subtle and soothing shades of grey and beige, and are furnished in an elegant and unfussy style.
Guests can enjoy an evening meal in the dining room on selected evenings. A tasty home-cooked three-course meal for two followed by tea or coffee and mints costs £50. Guests are welcome to take along their own bottle of wine. Lighter options are available on request.
There are seven guest bedrooms in total comprising two suites, two junior suites and three double rooms, all of which overlook the garden which runs down to the edge of the River Tay. They each have a vast six-foot wide bed dressed in a plump duvet and pillows from the Fine Bedding Company, as well as a flat-screen television with DVD player, free wireless internet access and an iPod docking station.
