Immerse yourself in the rugged beauty of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park at this luxury B&B in the picturesque village of Goathland, which found fame as the fictional settlement of ‘Aidensfield’ in the popular television series Heartbeat.
The village’s tiny railway station – one of the stops on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway (NYMR) heritage line – was also ‘Hogsmeade’ in the Harry Potter films.
Eighteen97 is the result of three years of hard work by its owners Fiona and Tim Gardham, who scoured the area to find the perfect property. After spotting the pretty stone cottage, which stands in more than an acre of grounds, they embarked on an extensive restoration project. The chic contemporary makeover that they’ve given the house pays homage to its original Arts and Crafts style. The couple are old hands when it comes to establishing boutique guest accommodation, having previously owned another stunning Yorkshire B&B. Once again, they’ve come up with a winning formula, combining relaxed yet stylish accommodation in a beautiful rural setting with great food and first class customer service. Testament to all of this is the fact that Eighteen97 is the only Visit Britain 5 star rated B&B in the area with a Gold Award and a Breakfast Award, and has also gained the Trip Advisor Travellers Choice Award for 2016 putting Eighteen97 in the top 25 B&B’s in the UK and the top 1% by their reviewers!
A steam train ride on the line between Pickering and Whitby is a must if you’re visiting this part of the world. There’s also a host of quaint villages, many with cosy pubs, waiting to be explored, including Egton, with its stepping stones across the river; Grosmont, with its art gallery and cafés; and Danby, where you’ll find the North Yorkshire Moors Park Centre.
This charming house was built in 1897 for the remains of the old Goathland church as a holiday home for the German classical pianist, Christian Gotlieb Padel (his initials are inscribed above the door). Stunning original features have been preserved, including the impressive fireplace and parquet floor in the sitting room, where you can relax beside the roaring fire and soak up the moorland views. The interior has a timeless look and feel, thanks to a soft colour palette, plush soft furnishings and elegant furniture.
Eighteen97 stands is pretty gardens, which Fiona and Tim are gradually restoring to their former glory. Ample car parking is available, and there are storage/drying facilities for walkers and cyclists. Delicious picnic hampers and hikers’ lunches can also be provided.
Tim and Fiona have crammed the three guest bedrooms with the kind of finishing touches that you’d expect from a boutique hotel, such as luxury toiletries, super soft bath sheets, snug bathrobes, a tray of yummy treats and refreshments, a flat-screen TV with DVD player and an iPod dock.
Travertine marble and white porcelain gives the en suite bathrooms a luxurious feel, whilst the chic bedrooms are all individually designed with feature king-sized beds and dressing tables with mirrors.
Prices for one of the king-sized double rooms range from £90 to £110 per night.
At Eighteen97 breakfast really is the most important meal of the day – no wonder that it received a breakfast award from Visit England! A traditional Yorkshire breakfast is always on offer, but there are also seasonal and lighter options to choose from. Everything is homemade using the finest Yorkshire produce, including meat from Radfords of Sleights, preserves from Rosebud of Masham and a teas and coffees from Taylors of Harrogate.
