Pentillie Castle is every bit as fabulous as its name suggests! It’s a picture-perfect, fairytale kind of a place; a stylishly renovated 17th century castle that sits pretty in an idyllic setting on the banks of the River Tamar in Cornwall.
It’s undoubtedly grand and the ultimate in luxury B&B, but it’s also the cosy and welcoming home of the Coryton family, who, with the support of their friendly team of staff, go out of their way to create a relaxed environment. Their hard work paid off when they took the top award – Gold – in the B&B/Guest Accommodation category at the South West Tourism Awards 2014. Since then, Pentillie has gained many more accolades for its exquisite guest experience, the latest being the Gold for Guest accommodation at the AA Awards 2018, 5* AA Breakfast Award and Gold Green Tourism Award 2018.
The castle forms part of a beautiful and historic country estate, and is surrounded by 55 acres of woodland. Every room affords guests stunning views across the Tamar Valley, an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB), to Dartmoor.
As well as sensitively modernising the castle in 2009, the Coryton family have put a huge amount of effort into restoring its beautiful gardens, which are now a visitor attraction in their own right. They’ve been featured in a Daily Telegraph article on the five Best Spring Gardens, as well as being likened to Cornwall’s famous Lost Gardens of Heligan, which are not far away.
St. Mellion’s famous golf course is nearby, and Cornwall’s north and south coasts are within easy reach, as is the Eden Project and Bodmin Moor. Plymouth is just 20 minutes away by car.
Pentillie Castle hosts a wide variety of events throughout the year, including outdoor theatre, garden tours and corporate days, and is also a licensed wedding venue. It’s also possible to arrange to have exclusive use of the castle.
Self Catered Exclusive Hire
Treat the Castle as your own… cook breakfast each morning on the wonderful four-door AGA, enjoy a sandwich on the terraces overlooking the river in the Cornish sun and take a long stroll around the gardens before relaxing in front of the fire and chatting with your friends and family.
Whilst this package is self catered, quotations to cater for various meals during your stay can be arranged e.g canapes and 3-course dinner. All catering must be booked in advance of your stay.
If you would like to place a food order to be delivered for your stay, you can order locally produced foods from the Tamar Grow Local food hub.
D-I-Y Suppers in the cosy guest kitchen
For Bed & Breakfast guests, Pentillie’s D-I-Y suppers are very popular and enable you to make the most of the cosy farmhouse style kitchen with 4-door AGA and beautiful scrubbed pine table. The table or a tray is laid for you, and when you are ready to eat, you just pop your main course in the AGA, open a bottle of wine, and wait approximately 20 minutes for it to be piping hot. Hey presto! Home from home, but without the washing up.
Dishes vary but often include the following: Lasagne – beef or vegetarian, Quiches – bacon or vegetarian, Ham and Cheese or Smoked Fish Ploughmans, Fish Pie and Curries – vegan and vegetarian as well as meat. Puddings on offer generally include a Chocolate Brownie, Frangipani Tart, Summer Pudding or Fruit Salad and Meringue. All come with clotted cream!
Dinner in the Castle
Pentillie offers ‘Dinner in the Castle’ most Thursday evenings, other selected dates (including some weekend dates!) are available, a full list of dinner dates can be found on their website.
The castle’s tasteful interior complements, rather than overshadows, its period features and rich history. The Coryton family’s antiques and original artworks have been combined with modern home comforts to create a relaxed, contemporary feel.
As well as having the beautiful grounds to explore, guests can make use of the outdoor swimming pool in the walled garden during the summer months. In the winter, the roaring open fires in the large, comfortable drawing room and the smaller sitting room are the perfect place to relax after exploring the countryside. There’s also a games room with a pool table, table tennis, board games and a DVD collection, as well as an honesty bar. Dogs are welcome to sleep in the Boot Room and can be walked in the grounds on their leads. Pentillie Castle even has a charging point for electric vehicles.
The nine guest bedrooms all have super king sized-beds, although most can be turned into twins if preferred. The Coryton family are huge fans of the toiletries from St.Kitts Herbery in North Cornwall, which are provided in the en suite bathrooms. There is disabled access to the Warren bedroom on the ground floor.
Room rates range from £125 to £230 per night.
The entire property can be rented on a self-catering or fully catered basis for those who’d like to get away with a larger group of family and friends, or for weddings. Contact the owners to discuss your requirements.
Breakfast is usually served between 8.30am and 9.30am, and is made using local produce, including homemade jams and apple juice.
A three-course evening meal, priced at £30 per person, is available when more than six guests are staying in the castle. Ask about this option at the time of booking, and let your hosts known about any dietary requirements, or likes and dislikes.
