The Reading Room is a unique, boutique holiday retreat, set amidst 70 acres of private grounds in the foothills of the Cambrian Mountains, overlooking the Brecon Beacons National Park, in South West Wales.

Follow the stone steps from the courtyard to the top of a beautiful 19th century rambling stone barn and you’ll find yourself in The Reading Room: an open plan hayloft hideaway, with a bird’s eye view of the surrounding mountains.

Converted by the previous artist owner to allow her to keep an eye on her beloved horses in the barn below, the loft is an eclectic space, full of original features, imaginatively remodelled into guest accommodation with a difference! There is a cabin-style double bed with hand carved scrolls and a stained glass window with a view through to the barn beyond.  Horses are no longer kept here, so you have the place to yourself and just to be extra cosy, you can draw the curtains to create a retreat within a retreat. It’s quirky, it’s fun and conjures up those wonderful childhood memories of a secret den to escape to!

The location is stunning with miles of walks from the door, across open parkland, through hidden valleys and on to secluded waterfalls; wildlife you may see along the way… Red kites, kingfishers, owls and hares.  Climb the hilltops for 360 degree vistas of this spectacular natural landscape – the Cambrian Mountains are Wales’ best kept secret.

There are also countless festivals and events taking place every weekend that you can enjoy while you stay including: bog snorkelling, a motorbike festival and a man v horse race!

The Reading Room is one of two, soon to be three, Cambrian Escapes owned and run by Duncan and Tanya Jordan who invite guests to rejoice in the amazing Welsh scenery surrounding their property.  Enjoy magical mountain views, stunning sunsets and the thrill of stargazing from your own private balcony complete with wood burning stove.  This is a Dark Skies area and the star scape of the Cambrian Mountains and Brecon Beacons National Park is out of this world. You’re pretty much guaranteed to see shooting stars, planets and, from April onwards, The Milky Way!

The Reading Room has a fantastic feel about it; a fairytale place, eclectic and homely, fanciful and full of surprises.  We definitely think it has star appeal – perfect for couples, solo travellers and creatives looking for somewhere to paint, write or just inspire!

A converted hayloft hidden in the rafters of a charming 19th Century Welsh stone barn, The Reading Room is a real boutique retreat, romantic, curious, a wonderful secret place to stowaway.

Picture a scene from Alice in Wonderland, or Tolkien’s Middle Earth… from the outside courtyard, climb the external stone stairs and step inside The Reading Room… A quizzical ensemble of beautiful antiques and quirky features capture the imagination: Hand-picked hard backed books, ranging from Dylan Thomas to Punch humour and poets such as Coleridge. Super large Chesterfield chairs.  An original 1920s gramophone with a selection of 78s – guaranteed to make you smile.

The cabin bed is luxurious and whimsical all at the same time – it is a double and can only be accessed from one side but that’s what makes it so cosy – a perfect snuggly space!

Keeping with the fanciful theme… the eccentric bathroom harks back to ‘country houses of old’, with hand painted wallpaper and what can only be described as a throne, believed to be foraged from a local mansion.

To the balcony and beyond! This is an incredible place to star gaze, cuddled up in the cushions and blankets provided, not to mention the log burner to warm your toes on, just watching the night sky.

Your hosts believe in ‘green’ and every bit helps so, green cleaning, recycling, composting and a free pick up service for guests who want to arrive by train.

Cambrian Escapes is deep in walking and cycling country. Tanya & Duncan can advise on walks and rides from the door, including favourite waterfalls, routes in the Brecon Beacons National Park, the Cambrian Mountains and along the Wales Coast Path.

There are three great pubs in the valley, all offering food.  The Neuadd Fawr Arms is a short walk, The Towy Bridge overlooks the river and is a longer walk and the Royal Oak is a short drive away. Llandovery has a small Co-Op and an organic shop called Iechyd Da. A little further afield there are a number of delicatessens including  Wrights Food Emporium and Ginhaus.

Enjoy a luxury self-catering, boutique secret escape in an extraordinary natural landscape!

The Reading Room is a stunning open-plan boutique loft suite, spacious, beautifully turned out and full of character.  Exposed beams and reclaimed wooden flooring throughout give a warm, authentic feel.

Principally offering self-catering accommodation there is a fully equipped kitchen with wooden worktops, Belfast sink, original Delft tiles, Stellar pans, dishwasher and electric oven.  On the other hand… you can enjoy a one night stay and order a DIY breakfast – provided in a large hamper, full of locally sourced goodies. Everything is on hand to cook up a great breakfast feast in the morning!

The cabin bed is a unique feature of The Reading Room and we think it is adorable.  If it’s not for you, Glanyrafon – Riverside Cottage offers alternative, self-catering accommodation at Cambrian Escapes, with larger beds, accessed from both sides.

Forget the world outside and sink into the beautiful old-fashioned enamel bath.

There is a flat screen TV and WiFi but with books, a gramophone and a balcony with a view of the whole galaxy, surely you would rather unplug from the real world, just for a while anyway.

Bed linen and bath towels are included for guests staying in The Reading Room and luxury bathroom toiletries are supplied by a local social enterprise company called Mydffai Trading Company, who provide ‘luxury toiletries with a social conscience’.

Everything you need for stargazing: plenty of blankets to wrap up with, comfy cushions and a newly fitted wood burning stove to keep you warm outside on the balcony.

Short break price £90 per night, minimum 2 night stay.
