After spending a weekend en famille in one of The KP’s plush lodges, we fell in love with this gorgeous boutique accommodation all over again.
Set in 180 acres of glorious countryside and with its own championship golf course, The KP is an idyllic retreat in the heart of the Yorkshire Wolds, the landscape made famous by the renowned artist David Hockney. It’s surrounded by rolling, green hills and thick woodland, and is located just outside the market town of Pocklington.
Our party of four adults and three children stayed in one of the luxurious self-catering lodges, complete with a huge hot tub and a private decked area boasting great views across the golf course. The interior of the lodge had a sleek and stylish contemporary look, and we especially loved the open plan living area, which was the perfect space for cooking, eating and relaxing together. We were also impressed to discover three huge and seriously swanky walk-in showers, as well as a vast, freestanding bath. The entire property was decorated and furnished to a very high standard in an elegant, contemporary style.
On site, in addition to the golf course, there’s a brand new health and fitness studio – The Box – and a Nordic relaxation area. In other word’s there’s plenty to keep you entertained for the duration of your stay. For those who prefer to stay on a bed and breakfast basis, rather than self-catering as we did, there are also a number of boutique rooms and suites to choose from.
We’d planned ahead and booked a table in The Glasshouse restaurant on the Friday evening, but we enjoyed drinks on the terrace outside first as the kids burnt off some energy in the play area. Both the terrace and the glass-fronted restaurant offer jaw-dropping views of the valley beyond. There was an impressive choice of dishes for both adults and children, and our entire party was impressed by the standard of their meals. The scallop starter and sea bream main course were huge hits, as was the steak!
As Yorkshire girls born and bred, we’re already familiar with the delights of the Yorkshire Wolds, the nearby city of York and the East Coast, so we seized the opportunity to explore a spot right on The KP’s doorstep that none of us had ever visited before.
The Madhyamaka Buddhist Centre is located at Kilnwick Percy Hall, which was once the centre of a grand country estate. It’s surrounded by woodland, pasture and farmland. Visitors are welcome to make use of the gardens, where the World Peace Café serves up great coffee and cake, as well as fantastic vegetarian food. Dogs are welcome and there’s a garden for children to play in. You can follow the footpath through the surrounding fields, past an incredibly atmospheric abandoned church and all the way around a picturesque lake.
After exploring the surrounding countryside on foot, it was time to head back to The KP for a soak in the hot tub – bliss!
