We love the cool Scandinavian vibe of this timber-clad, architect-designed B&B, which looks perfectly at home in the stunningly rugged landscape of Highland Perthshire.
Offering boutique accommodation in a choice of three guest bedrooms, The Steading is located just three miles from the pretty market town of Aberfeldy in the Upper Tay Valley. Nestling in the hillside on the edge of a picture postcard hamlet of thatched-roof cottages and surrounded by fir trees, it looks like an Alpine hideaway. With amazing views of the mountains and the River Tay winding its way through the valley below, it’s a tranquil place to escape to and a great base for exploring the wider region.
Aberfeldy is home to Dewar’s World of Whisky, a working distillery and heritage centre, and is also the gateway to Glen Lyon, the longest and one of the most magnificent glens in Scotland. Loch Tay is on the doorstep and, locally, you can enjoy a choice of wildlife safaris, from 4×4 off-roading adventures to wildlife watching with kilted rangers.

Clad in Siberian larch and Aberfeldy stone, The Steading is the award-winning creation of its owners Sarah Jane and Will Burton, who were assisted by local architect Colin Smith. Although contemporary in style, the chic yet cosy interior pays homage to the region’s rich heritage, with snuggly woollen throws and cushions by Scottish label Anta. Grey and heather accent colours, together with subtle touches of tweed, echo the colours of the surrounding landscape.
The area of the property used by B&B guests is accessed via a separate entrance and there’s a cosy lounge for you to relax in, where a wood burning stove flickers during the cooler months.
There are two en suite guest bedrooms – a super king-sized room on the ground floor with its own private outdoor seating area and a king-sized room upstairs in the eaves. Both have flat screen televisions; beds dressed in crisp, white linen from The White Company; and sleek white and grey shower rooms stocked with fluffy towels and robes, and quality toiletries. There’s also The Loft, a self-contained, studio room with a king-sized bed, en suite bathroom and mini kitchen, where a delightful continental breakfast is provided.
Thoughtful finishing touches included a refreshment tray tea tray stocked with a cafetière, fresh coffee and homemade shortbread, two wine glasses a corkscrew, and fresh flowers.
Prices are £110 per night based on two people sharing, or £85 for single occupancy throughout the year.
A delicious breakfast made with locally sourced ingredients is served in the drawing room beside the picture window. Take your time and linger over the orange and ginger-infused home-grown rhubarb with organic yoghurt; fresh, free range Steading eggs; locally milled oatmeal porridge; seeded breads; Glenlyon roasted coffee and whatever else takes your fancy.
