L’Abbaye-Château de Camon is one of the finest chateau hotels in France, a beautifully restored former 10th Century Benedictine monastery in the fortified village of Camon, nestled in the foothills of the Pyrénées. Château de Camon offers luxury chambres d’hôtes and is also available for exclusive use throughout the year, a fabulous venue for weddings, parties and celebrations.
There’s nothing quite like the view of snow-capped mountains to make you feel alive and at one with the world. Deep in Cathar countryside, in some of France’s wildest and most beautiful scenery, with wonderful views over the surrounding forested hills and mountain peaks, the location is awe-inspiring.
The building is monumental but the accommodation at L’Abbaye-Château de Camon is absolutely boutique, with just five guest rooms, originally old monks’ cells converted into bedrooms in the 18th Century. An architectural treasure, with grand spacious interiors, stone staircases, flagstone floors, frescoed ceilings and a cloistered courtyard all adding to the ambience.
Voted as one of the ‘Top Five Castle Hotels in France’ by the Huffington Post and in the Tatler Travel Guide, as one of the 101 best hotels in the world, it’s not about ‘must have’ mod-cons here. A stay at the chateau is to experience being enveloped in history, enjoying excellent food, regional wine, walking the Cathar paths of the Ariège and exploring this unspoilt corner of south west France.
L’Abbaye-Château de Camon’s hundreds of years of memories, together with its very beautiful and dramatic setting, makes it a rare find. A hidden gem boutique hotel, luxury chambres d’hôtes, restaurant and wedding venue in south-west France, where you can connect with both the nature that surrounds you and the human history of the place, all at the same time.
L’Abbaye-Château de Camon is a historic monument with an intimate and homely atmosphere in a spectacular setting.
Originally built as a Benedictine monastery in the 10th Century, Château de Camon was bought by Peter and Katie Lawton in 2005 who wanted to breathe life back into this historical building and set about converting it into a luxury chambres d’hôte.
” It was in very good condition, it just needed some love and attention – and loads of furniture of course!”
The vast interiors have been filled with volumes of 18th Century furnishings, venetian chandeliers and velvet drapes, creating a lovely nostalgic atmosphere. Outside the cloisters, the views over wooded hills and the distant Pyrenees mountains, the mature, terraced gardens leading down to a calm and relaxing swimming pool, all add to the majestic grandeur of this magnificent property.
With Peter’s 25 years hotel experience and Katie’s background in interior design, they have beautifully restored and decorated L’Abbaye-Château de Camon, turning an historic French monument into the loveliest of boutique chateau hotels.
Within easy distance of the airports at both Toulouse and Carcassonne, L’Abbaye-Château de Camon is located in the ancient village of Camon, classified as one of the most beautiful villages of France; just ten minutes drive from the medieval town of Mirepoix and half an hour from the ski resort of Mont D’Olmes in the Pyrénées.
