It has the look and feel of a remote Alpine retreat, and we love the fact that you can kick back with a hot chocolate in your very own wood fired outdoor hot tub. By day, you’ll have only birdsong for company and in the evenings you can admire the Milky Way in all its glory against a perfectly dark night sky.
This 700-year old stone byre is totally ‘off grid’ and not connected to anything. Located off a quiet country road between the village of Newcastleton and Bonchester Bridge in the Scottish Borders, it is also close enough to the boundary with Northumberland for guests to explore both areas. Nestled in four acres of private grounds, complete with a stream and waterfalls, this charming stone building together with an Alpine-style chalet form a a wonderfully rustic, yet luxurious, private retreat.
You’ll find Singdean high up in the hills – 345 metres above sea level – and surrounded by woodland. Well away from the hustle and bustle of everyday life, you can immerse yourself in nature, breathe in the fresh air and relax completely. Because Singdean is located close to Europe’s largest dark sky area – an official status granted by The International Dark Skies Association – there’s no light pollution and the night sky is simply breathtaking. You can see stars like you’ve never seen them before and, if you’re lucky, you may even spot the Northern Lights – all from just outside your room! The nearest towns are Hawick – known as the home of cashmere – and Jedburgh, a lovely sleepy little place with an abbey ruin and a great local butcher.
Singdean is the name of the house and the area. In fact, it has a fascinating history going back to at least 1376.
The interiors are decorated and furnished in a cosy Alpine style. Natural materials, such as wood and stone, feature throughout, and there are plenty of luxe finishing touches and accessories. Many of these are available to buy from the clothing and homeware boutique based at Singdean also in an old stone byre. Run by Singdean’s owners Christa and Del, the Alpine shop sells everything from snuggle slippers and woollen blankets to beautiful candle holders.
Luxury, ego free and off grid, there are two accommodation offerings to choose from:
Heimlig – A bed and breakfast suite with a difference. Just the one, it has been named Heimlig by hosts, Christa and Del, as their word for being utterly relaxed, warm, comfortable and happy. A suite with thick stone walls which was originally a byre and is attached to the main house but is independent. You are the only guests, you have your own entrance and your own wood fired outdoor hot tub and sauna which is prepared for you to use every evening.
Alpnhaus – Award winning, exclusive use and again, just for two. Relax and unwind in your very own mountain chalet retreat complete with outdoor wood fired hot tub. Alphnhaus is fully equipped for self catering but still with an Alpine breakfast included, delivered to your door each morning.
Set in the Cheviot Hills, 345m high on one of the most amazing and quiet ‘B’ roads Singdean’s location is beautifully rugged and wild and of course, that means you get weather, all sorts of Weather! With a capital W… And it’s Wonderful.
The property has impressive eco credentials to match its charming character and wonderful location; electricity comes from its own solar panels, water comes from a private spring and heating and hot water is provided by biomass. The accommodation is dog-friendly and the surrounding area offers plenty of wonderful walks to be enjoyed.

Heimlig – With only one private suite, you’ll have the whole place to yourselves. The accommodation is all on one level and has its own private entrance so you can come and go as you please. Inside you’ll find tea and freshly ground coffee-making facilities, as well as a flat screen television. The king-sized bed is dressed in pure cotton linen and a feather duvet. In the bathroom, you’ll find high quality toiletries. Outdoor hot tub and sauna.
Alpnhaus – Alpine-style chalet retreat, all natural furnishings, fabulous rustic interior with spacious living/dining area and fully equipped kitchen. Verandah with stunning views over the valley. Private wood fired outdoor hot tub.
Year round, whatever time of year you choose to visit is special, Christa and Del don’t have any seasonal or weekend price changes and never do discounts.
Heimlig £210 per night for 2 adults. The private wood fired hot tub and sauna is prepared for you every evening.
Alpnhaus £255 per night for exclusive use of the chalet for 2 adults. The private wood fired hot tub is prepared for you every evening.
Adult only and dog friendly (by prior arrangement).
There is a minimum stay of two nights for both Heimlig and Alpnhaus.
Traditional Alpine mountain breakfast together with fresh coffee is placed outside of your door for you to enjoy together.
Organic breakfast includes a selection of breads, hams and cheeses, as well as honey, jam and yoghurt. All of the ingredients are locally sourced wherever possible.
