We’ve admired Camomile Cottage since we first feasted our eyes on it; it encapsulates everything we love about the quintessentially English country cottage look. It’s a delightful grade II listed 16th century timber framed Suffolk farmhouse in an equally delightful setting in the picturesque Waveney Valley on the Suffolk/Norfolk border.

Inside it’s everything you’d imagine it to be and more. Log fires roar in the grates during the winter months, the stunningly beautiful timber beams and panelling are original, and it has a wonderfully romantic, rustic vibe that’s perfectly suited to its chocolate box good looks. Boutique bed and breakfast accommodation is offered in two double rooms in the cottage itself, but a charming oak-framed barn set in the peaceful gardens offers self-catering accommodation for those who prefer it.

Guests are greeted with a pot of tea or coffee and a generous helping of homemade cake on arrival, and are welcome to relax in the pretty cottage-style gardens, which extend to more than an acre. We’d advise you to kick back with a glass of wine on one of the steamer chairs on the patio.

The property is located on the outskirts of the market town of Eye down a secluded track lined with oak trees. The historic city of Norwich; the Norfolk Broads; Bury St. Edmunds, with its traditional market and abbey ruins; the coastal towns of Southwold and Dunwich; and a host of other attractions are within easy reach. Camomile Cottage was named in The Sunday Times’ ‘Ultimate 100 British Hotels’ for 2013 and ‘Best 50 Winter Breaks’ for 2014.

There’s free, wireless internet access throughout the cottage, the barn and the gardens, and ample parking spaces on the drive. A secure lock up is also provided for guests who want to bring bikes. In Camomile Cottage, guests are welcome to relax in the cosy lounge for as long as they like.

Chobbs Barn would look perfectly at home on the television series Grand Designs, thanks to its vaulted ceiling with oak joists and open-plan, contemporary interior. It sleeps two adults, a young baby and is dog-friendly. The lounge has a large, L-shaped leather sofa, a flat-screen television and DVD player, and a Bose sound system with iPod docking station. In the kitchen, you’ll find a dining table with two chairs, a digital hob, built-in oven, Nespresso coffee machine and everything else you could possibly need to cater for yourselves. A complimentary food hamper is provided to help you settle in, which includes milk, fresh bread, butter, jams, coffee, tea and free range eggs. One well-behaved dog is welcome at Chobbs Barn, but please discuss this with the owner at the time of booking.

In Camomile Cottage, the two en suite guest bedrooms are located on the first floor. They each have a standard sized double bed; a television and DVD player with a large choice of DVDs; refreshments, including mineral water and handmade chocolates; comfortable mattresses; feather pillows; goose down duvets and crisp Egyptian cotton bed linen. The en suite bathrooms are stocked with luxurious Molton Brown products and fluffy white towels for when you emerge from the power shower.

The Oak Room has a period French bed and features exposed limed oak ceiling and wall timbers, reminding guests of the property’s age and unique character. The doorways are a little low, so watch your head!

The Elm Room has exposed beams, original Elm floorboards and an antique French Louis XVI-style bed.

The bedroom in Chobbs Barn is furnished with a king-sized, four-poster bed with a pocket sprung mattress dressed in Egyptian cotton sheets and a goose down duvet. The contemporary en suite wet room features an Aqualisa power shower, fluffy white towels and Molton Brown products.

Bed and breakfast prices start from £99 per room per night based on two people sharing, or from £85 for single occupancy.  A minimum two-night stay applies at weekends.

Chobbs Barn is available on a self-catering basis from £255 for a two-night, weekend break in low season. A minimum two-night stay applies at all times.

Guests staying on a B&B basis can enjoy a cup of tea in bed before heading downstairs for a hearty breakfast, which is served in the garden room overlooking the surrounding countryside. As well as helping themselves to the buffet selection, guests can pick the hot breakfast of their choice. Options include everything from a full English to Eggs Benedict or Eggs Royale. Eggs come from the resident free range hens and meat is sourced from local butchers.
